Gary Card is a British set designer and illustrator, but it is his work in the fashion industry that has made him "one of London's' most talked about talents", as SHOWstudio calls him. His client list is a who's who of the elite, including Comme Des Garçons, Uniqlo, Topshop, House of Holland, Dover Street Market, Nike, Adidas, Stella McCartney, Penguin, and LG, not to mention that Lady Gaga regularly commissions him to make costumes and headpieces for her. But you've probably seen his work featured in one of several dozen of press publications, including The New York Times, Another Man, Another Magazine, Dazed & Confused, i-D, British Vogue, Vogue Homme Japan, V Man, Pop, and Paradis. And, only recently, the Golborne Gallery gave him a solo exhibition to unveil the original artworks that helped create the colorful, imaginary worlds that his fantastical creations inhabit. The exhibit was titled
Happy Breakfast and, it seems, the name will have an ongoing use beyond the showcase: it is also the title of his forthcoming designer toy series from
Unbox Industries! Depicting the human-like "Smudge" (pictured below) and two of his friends, the prototypes for these works were displayed at the exhibition, each one having a gorgeously crafted form, the vinyl medium being reimagined to resemble something like carefully hand-formed paper mache. Simply stunning.
