Japanese folklore is steeped with supernatural beings as diverse as ghosts and demons, goblins and gods, but they are all collectively known as yokai (or
yōkai,
妖怪). And thees creatures that can be anything from benevolent to mischievous to downright destructive were the focal theme of
Clutter Magazine Gallery's
Yokai exhibition, featuring contributions by
Tokyo Jesus,
Eimi Takano, and
Octoplum. With each artist interpreting these beings of legend through their own aesthetic, I decided to delve into the creatures that inspired the works as well as the potential intents of the artists in my recent exhibition recap on
CoART Magazine, which can be read
HERE.
