I can't hear the name "Crom" without thinking of Robert E. Howard's fantastical tales from the Hyborian Age, that same name being the unforgiving god of Conan's Cimmerian people. Of course,
Justin Alan Volpe original character of the same name probably does not stem from Howard's creation, appearing to be derived more from Skeletor and the entire Master of the Universe line. Standing a little over 6-inches tall to the tip of its helmet's horns, this skeletal warrior has been hand-painted in the extremely tiny "The Red Death Colorway" edition of 3 pieces. Named after the Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Masque of the Red Death", originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy" in 1842, this version seems to get to the heart of the character… much like the namesake from the Gothic fiction tale, a mysterious figure who attends a masquerade disguised as a Red Death victim, whose very presence seems to kill all in attendance… and whose "costume" proves to contain nothing tangible inside it! Yes, I'd say Volpe's "Crom" is an interpretation of Death itself, though clad in the warrior's attire that Conan would approve of… And this new version is available now in Volpe's
POPprolific online shop for $85 apiece.
