The work of Singapore-based artist Carlo "
Wetworks" Cacho has impressed me for years, though I do find his newest outing — the pictured "Bloody Happy Tree Friends" series — doesn't bear the wow I expect from his work. If you're unfamiliar with
Happy Tree Friends, it's a comedic cartoon involving anthropomorphic cute forest animals enduring accidental events of bloodshed, pain, dismemberment, evisceration, and/or death. For Cacho's immaculately hand-painted, blind boxed series, he has taken the 2½- to 3-inch tall figures from the show's
Series 1 and
Series 2 toy lines and repainted them in monotone color schemes with shocks of blood red. With the only notable alteration to the design being the conversion of their Pac-Man eyes into X eyes, this feels a bit weak from a formidable sculptor like Cacho, who could've significantly altered the pieces for a bit more 'wow'… Available at this November's DesignerCon, these will be found at the
Martian Toys booth alongside the production blind boxes.
