Gong Gong is a common Cantonese nickname for a grandfather, similar to grandpa, and I think
Okedoki beautifully captured the multi-generational, familial feel in their new "Gong Gong and Baby" resin set. Announced as "Love Life Series no. 1," the pictured "Joy Edition" of the duo features such perfectly rendered faces of adoration between them. Though, of course, the addition of a fluid wisp of colorful hair and turtle shell-like back adornment does stand out on these. The latter is described by the artist as symbolizing how "we carry life's burden on our backs," I have to wonder if this might also imply the Chinese water god, also named Gong Gong. Though typically depicted in a more cruel, monstrous fashion, the water god concept would fit several of the elements… Regardless, this is a pristinely executed work of art, produced by
VTSS Toys in an edition of only 48 sets. Measuring roughly 7 × 4 × 7 inches, these are available now from the Okedoki online shop for $175CAD (approx. $135).
