We've fallen in love with pop surrealist painter
Mab Graves's strange mixtures of dinosaurs and cats, especially her depiction of a Tyrannosaurus rex with a feline face. In an effort to continue expanding her artistic repertoire, Graves undertook the 30-hour long process of hand-creating the pictured "Dinokitty Kittyrex" in needle felt. For those that don't know, needle felting is the process of using a sharp tool to turn wool strands into 3D objects, using wool's tendency to stick together when agitated. Graves admits that this is "a medium I've been wanting to try since I was a kid," though she describes the experience — in retrospect — as entering a "30-hour, glassy-eyed obsession trance." The result is fantastic, a fresh interpretation of her rapidly becoming iconic design, though — given the lengthy time required to make these — we suspect this will remain a one-of-a-kind work or very rarely be revisited.
