In the beginning of the designer toy movement, the term "fashion doll" was bandied around briefly. A bit too inclusive a term, one that couldn't be seperated from things like Barbie easily, it appears that
Kidrobot might be re-entering that arena. Already anticipating having an assortment of "different drag queens or designers[…] adding their own fabulous flavor or flair to her identity," the new "
Vladonna" vinyl doll is preparing for the world to meet her. Created by
Matthew James Lent, who most might know better as Pearl from
RuPaul’s Drag Race, alongside his business partner,
Gina Garan, "Vladonna" appears like a mocking parody of the "hourglass figure" — big boobs, tiny waist, and wide hips — with a splash of Kim Kardashian for fun (huge ass, long legs, and voluptuous lips).
According to Lent, "We wanted her [Vladonna] to be very sexually ambiguous. Is she trans? Is she not trans? We changed our minds and decided to make her a woman. Full fish." Already in the works to be released in limited edition versions, there is a hope that she will see three or four themes available annually, including such possibilities as "Christmas Vladonna" and "S&M Easter Vladonna." I find the overall form very reminiscent of the "
Sheelah" figure, so it really is how the paint applications alter the figure that will define it…
