This past weekend I finally had a chance to visit New York's
Jonathan LeVine Gallery to see Seattle pop artist
Mike Leavitt's third solo exhibition there,
King Cuts. Leavitt's career has been focused on making sculpture renditions of famous people, transforming their human form by incorporating an almost surreal array of elements from their most famous works. For this outing, Leavitt focused on film directors, producing a wonderful gathering of 18-inch tall wood sculptures in the likeness of such greats as Kathryn Bigelow, Stanley Kubrick, Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson. Trust me when I say that no photo can truly capture the beauty of these works, their $8500 apiece pricetags being exceedingly reasonable when you gaze upon the creativity and craft employed to make each one.
