Much like how the '90s gave rise to the Young British Artists, there is — in my mind — a group of Young Asian Artists that have been rising to prominence in recent years. While still influenced by the kaiju toys they were raised on, these Young Asian Artists have brought back a more contemporary art oriented voice to their respective country's designer toy markets. One such artist is InstincToy’s Hiroto Ohkubo, who has been exploring the possibilities with his vinyl toy sculptures (such as the previously reviewed “Snowy”), a personal favorite of which is the carnivorous grin wearing “Muckey” bear.
Earlier this year, InstincToy debuted the “Mini Muckey,” a palm-sized reinterpretation of its bigger brother. But there are several notable differences, especially with the second “Choco Cake” edition, such as the second set of standard teeth and imbuing the vinyl with chocolate aroma! Yes, that's right, the vinyl gives off a sweet scent, which means I wish Smell-o-vision was a real thing so that I could share that wonderful aspect with all of you in my newest in-depth video review…
