The world was abuzz yesterday with the news — via an
Instagram post by legendary Japanese designer Nigo — that Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly, better known as
KAWS, would be collaborating with the former A Bathing Ape (BAPE) founder & owner's UT line from
Uniqlo. But speculation was high regarding what exactly the collaboration would encompass… Nigo, whose worked with KAWS in one form or another since 1997, has enlisted the artist for a capsule collection of 12 different men's T-shirts that will feature KAWS' artwork, including at least one depiction of the iconic Companion character. Set to release in March of 2016, many are hoping that this will be the first step in KAWS doing more designer toy releases, establishing a new connection like he had with OriginalFake. While not specifically mentioned as being discussed, Nigo did reveal in an interview with
Complex Magazine that while "KAWS artworks themselves are rare, […] he’s told me that he also likes to produce some things that people can get hold of if they want it."
