With an operatic sense of scope added by the backdrop, Taiwanese-American artist Mei-Jean Hsu, known under her abbreviated name of
MJ Hsu, has created this depiction of “Matsu” (or “Mazu”), the Chinese patron goddess who is said to protect seafarers, as a 3-inch tall Dunny. While Hsu’s version is attired much more elaborately than Matsu’s legend’s Song Dynasty roots would've suggested, Hsu wonderfully captures the red robe aspect associated with Matsu while also imbuing the robe with a water walking appearance of the watery lower half. The lantern, in order to guide sea voyagers, is perfect but not as wonderful as Matsu’s two guardian generals: the two-horned demon “Thousand Miles Eye” and the one-horned demon “With-the-Wind Ear.” A gorgeous work, I do find the relatively flat coloration of the Dunny’s face in contrast with the wonderful wash of the attire… I suspect this is a commissioned work of art, but if this unique piece is available for sale then Hsu will surely announce it on
her Instagram. Those interested can
contact the artist directly for commission inquiries as well.
