Growing up in Japan, Sasha Katcher was surrounded by adorable and unique toys, which made her leap as an adult into creating designer toys all the more logical. Using 3D printing technology to prototype her pieces, she works under the guise of
Sakabutsu. I quite like the original illustration she created of the “Abyss Fairy” (below) but her sculpted version (above) seems to lose the artistic personality of the original; it's a little too clean, too refined, and too ordinary. The original illustration shows more of an artist voice, one that is lost in the translation. Cast in resin, the “Abyss Fairy” stands a little over 3-inches tall and I am very intrigued by the look of the piece glowing, of which there is no picture… Katcher evidently gave more of a soft glow to the whole body with a concentrated, stronger glow at the ends of her lures, which is a brilliant incorporation of what is capable when everything is hand-cast and controlled by the artist. Available now in the
Sakabutsu online shop, these pieces cost $43 apiece.
