"Me Gusta" resin...
Translated from Spanish to English "Me Gusta" means - I like it - and in fact I do like resin :-) and so does Brian Maloy who created this peculiar looking stump of a fellow named "Me Gusta", who is based off the Rageface character from reddit.com. What are his ties to this site, and why would he create such a figure... well, I asked Brain for some background on this piece as in who, what, when, where, and why... and he answered, so take a min and have a read!
Who: My background is in concrete art with an emphasis in design and mold making. That company closed with the recession so now I have a regular boring day job. I started an art toy studio, Whomp Toys, so I can make cool art toys with some of my good artist friends here in Birmingham, AL. I produced my first figure, Xaan the Unamused, completely by myself: concept, design, sculpting, molding, casting, painting and sales. Boy, I learned a lot about how not to do things in that process!
What: Me Gusta is a 2" resin figure, hand painted and will be packaged in a poly bag with a sweet header card. It is based on the Me Gusta rageface from reddit.com (specifically www.reddit.com/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu). These are a bunch of really hilarious comics using crudely drawn faces to represent the plethora of emotions experienced in common occurrences. I thought it was a funny design and that there would be people who were interested, so I decided to make some toys. I'm pretty sure it's not copyrighted, so I went for it! There will be 15 for sale and if those sell out, there will be a second run of 15. They will be $15.
When: I've finished painting them and now I'm putting together the packaging so I should have them ready by the end of the month. I'll let you know an exact date in the coming days!
Where: My site is https://whomptoys.bigcartel.com Not much there except the last few Xaan's at the moment.
Why: I love toys! I have always been a comic and toy collector, mainly weird stuff, starting with the Playmates Turtles in the 80's and then McFarlane and Moore in college and now that I'm a *professional working adult* (ahem), I am addicted to the designer stuff. I am obsessed with the idea of making 3D art that surprises people and makes them happy! My goal is eventually to have a great studio with a team of very talented people making toys at the level of KR, Toy2R and Super7! That might take a while but it's the dream :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer all these questions Brian, and what a fun project you spearheaded here. For more info on Brian, you can visit his site HERE!
