We're thrilled to show off
Dunny Hecho en México, or DMX, collective member
Tadeo Mendoza's contribution to their forthcoming "Día de Muertos 2" series, the pictured "The Lady in Black". With all works in this series being inspired by the multi-day Mexican holiday wherein gatherings of friends and family pray for, remember, and offer help on the spiritual journey of those dear to them that are deceased, I must admit that I can't recognize "The Lady in Black" as any single source for Mexican folktales. In fact, I see elements of two different ghostly South American legends: she is adorned in the dark garb sometimes associated with
Santa Muerte, or the Black Lady, as well as having the sunken, skull-like eyes of Santa Muerte's skeletal face, but with the feminine flesh on the face, giving an aura of mourning, it reminds me of
La Llorona, of The Crying Woman. Regardless of what she is meant to depict, her execution is top-notch looking, the sculpted face melding beautifully into the hooded head.
The
previously announced "Dia de Muertos 2" series (DMX8) will feature an amazing array of talent. The lineup has been revealed to be Avatar666, Cucaracha Borracha, El Hooligan, Jump Jumper Ant, Lupilu Soler, Matucha, Mr. Mitote, Shiffa, Tadeo Mendoza, and Yoste KMKZ with three chase designs made by Matucha, Lupila Solir, and Cucaracha Borracha as well as one Golden Ticket prize made by Tadeo Mendoza, though the Golden Ticket winner will just have to cover shipping costs of it. Sales of the $105 apiece blind boxes (shipping not included) will begin on October 20th, 2017 at 11am Pacific time, with those interested simply emailing orders to
dunnyhechoenmexico [at] gmail [dot] com.
