Colus is a truly amazing artist within the designer toy movement, having not only sculpted works for release by the likes of Munky King but also bringing his own fabulist sculptures to life. Pictured is "Jumper," which was originally titled "Jumperr" when
we announced it in April, which depicts the fluid form of a stylized rabbit having impaled itself on a harshly angular stake. We were originally told that this work is an exploration of "the idea of not being good enough or expecting too much from yourself," of worrying that "you should have jumped higher." But where did this concept begin? "I sketched this way back as a shirt idea," Colus admits. "It's always stuck with me and decided to make a [digital] sculpt" of it in ZBrush.
Having recently purchased a Form2 3D printer, Colus was able to print pristine 3D forms to use as master parts in the resin mold making process. Spending days just casting parts, the assembled resin hare resides on an actual wood post, measuring roughly 13-inches tall total. Is there anything he'd change? "I hate the Michaels [Crafts Store purchased] base, so I will use a normal square for future ones," he admits, referencing the look of the original teasers
we revealed at the beginning of the year. If all goes as planned, Colus will have a mere 5 pieces of this completed in time for this year's DesignerCon, but we expect he could make more if he wasn't busy creating a second original sculpture — of a buck — in time for the convention!
