We
previously teased the “Hand of Glory” vinyl sculpture from
Unbox Industries, based on German artist
Florian Bertmer’s 2011 illustration “There is a light that never goes out.” For those unfamiliar with what a Hand of Glory is, it is an 18th-Century — or earlier — creation that is a dried and pickled severed left hand from a man who has been hanged that becomes a five-pointed candelabra for candles made from the fat of the same corpse. Supposedly, these candles when lighted and placed (as if in a candlestick) in the Hand of Glory, would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented. Or, conversely, when the hair of the dead man was used as the wicks, the candles would give light only to the holder and had the power to unlock any door it came across. A hyper-detailed designer toy release, this rendition of that classic piece of morbid marvelousness is scheduled for a March 2016 release, which "some pretty tripped out variants" already planned. Bertmer is designing the box packaging, making this whole piece surely fantastic looking, though the fingers will sadly not come with little removable flames… rather they will look extinguished as seen herein.
