A few years ago, we had heard rumors (and seen some teasers) of a Kidrobot Dunny 'Chess' series that featured a whole slew of artists, all given the task to create a one figure in the 'Chess' set (King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight or Pawn) all coming together to complete an entire set... where, you could play with them... and as you can see from the photo above (posted by
ReviewsToys), there were some strong designs from
Otto Bjornik, Kronk, Nathan Jurevicius, MAD, Frank Kozik, Scott Tolleson, 64 Colors and others... so what happened?!?! We think that the powers that be felt that the series as a whole didn't mesh with the chess theme, sure... the designs were rad, but if you look at most all chess sets, there is a type of congruity... and this lacked that. So... instead of scrapping the whole idea, why not ask an artist who has already tackled a CUSTOM Chess series to do a production one... and the door for
Otto Bjornik was opened... and today, we finally get to share some leaked photos (from
Ikon Collectibles) of this series that we have been itching to show off for some time now!
The "
Shah Mat" Dunny Chess series from Otto Bjornik and Kidrobot is actually happening, and as you can see from the pictures... this is going to be one rad series. Featuring the beautiful Black/White theme as well as Black/Whitee teams, these figures in this series series is a full and playable chess set that features the
King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawns... and from the looks of it, these will be sold 2-per box... similar to Kidrobots Street fighter figures, giving you both a Black/White piece and hopefully... if you buy a case, you can complete an entire set! Oh, and if the "Shah Mat" name sounds familiar, that's because Otto used it in his customs he created back in 2012 (posted
HERE and
HERE)... what a great idea, awesome execution, and how rad is this going to be?!?!
Now... when can we expect them to release?!?! It appears that Ikon has them up for
pre-order now with a ship date of August 2016... so, although nothing has been confirmed by Kidrobot officially, it appears that this will be an end of Summer release... hopefully sooner, it would actually make for a great SDCC drop, but we will see what happens. All in all, we are sad to see an artist series featuring tons of different artists get canceled - once again - but are really stoked to see this series get carried on by an artists who nailed his mark, and drove the theme home! What are your thoughts?!?!? We would love to know what you all think.
