A creation of 18th-Century — or earlier — minds, the Hand of Glory is a dried and pickled severed left hand from a man who has been hanged that becomes a five pointed candellabra for candles made from the fat of the same corpse. Supposedly, these candles when lighted and placed (as if in a candlestick) in the Hand of Glory, would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented. Or, conversely, when the hair of the dead man was used as the wicks, the candles would give light only to the holder and had the power to unlock any door it came across. This is all relevant as a depiction of a Hand of Glory is the first collaboration between German artist
Florian Bertmer and
Unbox Industries! Using Bertmer's 2011 illustration “There is a light that never goes out” (pictured below) as the basis, Unbox are creating a three-dimensional vinyl rendition as teased above! I'm not sure how they will depict the flames upon the wicks yet, but I hope the are removable add-ons so that you can display your piece as lit or unlit as you see fit. We'll definitely have more information as it comes to light.
