The popular theory is that the Fiji mermaid (or Feejee mermaid) originated as an art form of fisherman from Japan and the East Indies, constructing faux mermaids by stitched the upper body of a juvenile monkey onto the lower torso of a fish, though the truth remains a mystery… A common sideshow feature, these works were presented as the mummified reamins of a half-mammal, half-fish — a horrific version of the mermaid! Mostly known due to P.T. Barnum including it in his museum of mysteries and oddities, now — the better part of 200 years later —
Awesome Toy unveals their own rendition of the grotesque creature cast in vinyl! Spotted at the
Toy Soul 2015 convention, these pieces appear to be roughly 4-inches long and cast in two parts, the original taxidermy line connecting the two animals being the sold point of articulation. Expect better pictures and more information soon!
